why you should play midsummer night's choice

in midsummer night's choice, you play as duke's only son or daughter. your mother die when you young, and father sick for almost as long.
with war on horizon, your father plan marry you off to lord or lady penderghast - someone far older who you never meet before, but have money and resources to spare.

you, of course, run away with help from best friend prenzie and courtier morgan. but you can not possibly run without disguise.
so, you crossdress, escape to magical forest rule by faerie queene, and shakespearean hijinks ensue. you learn hidden secrets, meet and possibly seduce your fairy reflection, put on performance, engage in battle, and choose your fate.
oh, and again, you meet and possibly seduce your fairy reflection. is that not amazing?
so, will you fight for father, or for faerie queene? will you learn how harness magic, prove self artist, or bravely charge through whatever may come?

"You are perceptive. I am actually a noble in disguise, being hunted. But please don't ask any more than that."

"Ha!" the knight laughs. "That's absurd."

how do this game handle crossdress?

want say up front that this crossdress aspect have little focus in characters' eyes.
would say most uncomfortable part happen during play chapter, where prenzie ask if you "forget real sex" after so long in disguise.
but, far as see through many different play throughs with both male and female character, never see any question if "really" man or woman. if anything, people so convince by disguise that even when remove for play, no one know.
you might encounter points where disguise falter, but no one question - they take as joke, or just believe you strange.
if do happen find something uncomfortable, promise will update.

"And what do you think about Florimell? What does she look like?" you ask, casually.

"She is lovely. Well-formed—about your height, actually. A nose quite similar to yours, and eyes of much the same color as yours. The overall impression of her face and body is strikingly similar to yours in some strange and coincidental way."

romance

you have 4 romance choices, 3 with gender that you influence.
you choose prenzie and morgan's genders as game start. meanwhile, lady penderghast if you play as male, or lord penderghast as female.
piccolita only one not able choose, who always female.
in any case, gender not factor in who able marry, so can marry anyone - or no one - regardless what play. :)

"We'll simply have to convince your father somehow. I saw a play about this once. I think we need to pretend you are dead. Wait a moment. Actually, that didn't end up too well for the young lovers involved. Never mind."

choices, choices!

something that really love about this game: your choices often come back. can not change major story beats, but things like your disguise, choices during play, character dialogue and reputation, and more can all come back to spice up - or haunt - your playthrough.
first playthrough probably take about two hours, and even plays after this still take time. with everything this game track, each time you play will have at least small but fun differences.

downside: for completionists, some achievements really obscure, with specific choice path that not always so obvious. this can be very fun when you stumble on accident, but frustrate if want all. for instance, one require specific disguise as male character, specific low stat, and then choose to insult someone. there also is no back button, so if you make mistake when hunt for achievement, you need restart entirely.

"Your words are truer than you know," she smiles. "I am certain that you will discover many such betrayals among humankind."

humour

this is game where you have chance seduce fairy reflection, sing sweet ballads to bear, and die tragically on stage as fake blood spurt everywhere.
of course this game hilarious.
naturally have shakespearean tropes and references, but not need deep knowledge for good laugh. often, choices and even failures hilarious - you can make horrifying "cute" face, dance so hard you make mess, and completely fail at relate with common folk.

"What on earth are you attempting to do with your face, imitate the great gargoyles atop the chapel? Put your features back where they belong and never make that face again. Lord, I fear I will see that look in my nightmares tonight."

You gaze around at the lovely forest and think of everything you've experienced today. As you listen to the whispers of the leaves far up in the canopy of the forest, you are overcome with the beauty that surrounds you.

Almost unbidden, enchanting poetry flows from your lips: words that speak of your determination to live your life on your own terms, of your fears, but also your excitement. Prenzie pauses in her own singing to listen.
