what even is magic?

when we work magic, we shape energy around us. this energy might go to friend, to enemy - to anyone or anywhere, really. as faery not care for idea that magic is good or bad, black or white: magic is what you make, in that way.
in some small way, even just to make warm drink for friend is magic. not consciously, and probably not especially powerful, but this is something you do with love. you try to make just as they like, maybe imagine smile on their face, you stir and gently blow before serve.

magic and heart certainly relate, but not all same - one can happen without other, even if often link. in essence, think magic is what happen when put purpose and feelings to action. much magic can be unconscious for that reason, we do not always recognise feeling and thought in moment, so this will fizzle without much impact. but when we shape on purpose, we make spells and charms.

some spells look like intricate ritual, with cauldron and mirror and candles.
some look like just hold object, to fill with energy and feelings that want bring.
some look like any ordinary activity, with just that extra touch.
some, at times, hardly even visible to outsider, where shape through hands-on energy work. daffodil divider

what can tools be, then?

really, anything you please. you do not need wait for "most special magical tool" to appear.
as shadow often sew and work magic through stitches, this make even ordinary needles very special tools. of course custom handcraft needle may feel more special, but not necessary unless feel truly, utterly lost without.
this go for larger ritual tools, too. if you already have something that work, is there good reason to replace? at times, best and most magical object is simply one which you use and love most, with longest history.

of course, sometimes very good reason to get new tools - best not mix your spell bowls with your food bowls. but as general rule, new fancy tools do not necessarily make magic better or more special, just as mundane objects do not invalidate magic.
